Student Arrested After Gun Found at Miami High School

A student at John A. Ferguson Senior High School in southwest Miami-Dade was arrested after being found with a gun on campus, officials confirmed.

Parents received a voicemail from the principal saying police had responded to reports of a weapon. Miami-Dade Schools Police quickly investigated, located the firearm, and arrested the student. No threats were made, and classes briefly went on lockdown during the investigation.

Authorities credited the FortifyFL tip system for helping prevent potential violence. “Tools such as these continue to be vital in keeping our schools and communities safe,” the district said in a statement.

Students said they were told to remain in classrooms, while one parent expressed fear for her child’s safety, saying she sends her children to school “to learn, not to risk their lives.”

Unverified student claims suggested the suspect may have planned to start a fight and had a list of names, but officials have not confirmed these reports. The district emphasized that all safety tips are taken seriously and warned that such actions can have “life-altering consequences.”

The student’s name and grade level were not released.
