Serena Williams Reveals Weight Loss with GLP-1 Medication

Tennis legend Serena Williams has opened up about her recent weight loss, crediting a GLP-1 medication for helping her shed 31 pounds since last year.

In an exclusive interview with TODAY, Williams said she turned to the medication—often prescribed for diabetes and obesity—after struggling to lose weight following the births of her two daughters.

“I tried everything—walking, running, even vegetarian and vegan diets—but nothing worked,” Williams explained. “After my second child, it got harder. I had to try something different.”

Since starting the medication, she says her blood sugar has improved, her joints feel lighter, and her chronic knee pain has eased. “I just feel normal again,” she shared.

Williams admitted she initially battled stigma around using a weight loss drug. “As an athlete, I didn’t want to feel like I was taking shortcuts,” she said. “But this wasn’t about shortcuts—it was about health.”

Her husband, Alexis Ohanian, co-founder of Reddit, serves on the board of Ro, the health care company she now partners with to promote awareness about GLP-1 treatments.

GLP-1 medications mimic a hormone that curbs appetite and slows digestion, helping with both weight management and diabetes.

Williams hopes her story helps normalize the conversation. “There’s still stigma, but I want women to know—it’s about health, not shortcuts.”
