In a bold step to tackle homelessness, Miami-Dade County has transformed a former La Quinta Inn into “Hideaway Bay,” a supportive housing complex for elderly residents. The $14 million repurposing effort includes studio apartments with kitchenettes, with rent capped at 30% of the resident’s income—averaging $300 a month. “It’s not a handout—it’s a hand up,” said Ron Book of the Homeless Trust. With capacity for 130 people, the project targets Miami’s unsheltered population, now under 1,000. Most residents are elderly or disabled. For Sharon Moore, once homeless and depressed, it’s been life-changing: “I cried the first week—from relief and gratitude.”
