A family argument ended in tragedy Thursday when the owner of a southwest Miami-Dade car dealership was fatally shot by his brother during a triple shooting that triggered a massive law enforcement response.
Authorities said Roberto Leyva, 49, opened fire at Priced Right Motors on Southwest 73rd Avenue and 45th Street, killing his brother, 34-year-old Eduardo Juan Rivero Jr. A third man, Armando Yadro Alea, 35, was also shot and hospitalized in stable condition. Alea’s relationship to the shooter or victim remains unclear.
According to Miami-Dade Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz, the shooting stemmed from an ongoing family dispute. Deputies responded quickly, exchanging gunfire with Leyva before taking him into custody. Leyva was hospitalized in critical condition. No deputies were injured during the confrontation.
“This unfortunate situation is domestic-related and not a random act of violence,” Cordero-Stutz said, adding that authorities were grateful there weren’t more victims.
Dramatic aerial footage showed heavily armed deputies surrounding the dealership, taking cover behind vehicles, and evacuating civilians with their hands raised. Surveillance video also captured moments leading up to the shooting.
Because deputies fired their weapons, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement has launched a standard investigation into the police response.
The incident sent shockwaves through the community, highlighting how quickly domestic disputes can escalate into public danger.
