Trump Administration Revokes TPS Extension for Venezuelans

The Trump administration has rescinded the extension of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for approximately 600,000 Venezuelans in the U.S., reversing a decision made under President Biden.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem announced the decision on Fox & Friends, stating that the administration is withdrawing the TPS renewal directive. The move halts an 18-month extension granted by former Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas just days before Biden left office.

Noem criticized the previous administration’s extension, arguing it allowed individuals to remain in the U.S. without consequences. The Biden administration had justified the extension due to Venezuela’s ongoing humanitarian crisis under Nicolás Maduro’s regime. The now-revoked TPS would have extended protections until October 2026 for Venezuelans who arrived before July 31, 2023.

TPS, established in 1990, grants temporary legal status to nationals from countries experiencing severe crises, such as war or natural disasters. The decision to revoke the extension marks a significant shift in immigration policy under Trump, impacting thousands of Venezuelans who had been granted temporary legal protection.
