96-Foot “Yellow Submarine” Removed from Florida Keys Waters

by | Aug 13, 2025 | Miami News | 0 comments

A massive abandoned submarine has been lifted from waters near Marathon in the Florida Keys. The 96-foot vessel, once intended as a tourist attraction by a local resident, had deteriorated over the years into a hazard.

“Derelict vessels… pose serious threats to the environment, boater safety, and navigation,” said Brittany Burtner, Monroe County’s Senior Administrator for Marine Resources. The county partnered with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission to remove the submarine, one of 134 derelict vessels cleared from Keys waters in the first half of 2025.

Crews will soon remove two more vessels — a shrimp boat near Islamorada and a grounded boat visible from U.S. 1 near Bahia Honda State Park.
