A NW Miami-Dade home was engulfed in flames after a space heater sparked a fire, leaving a 92-year-old woman and her 70-year-old daughter homeless. The fire broke out around 10 a.m. Sunday when a space heater was connected to a power strip, igniting a blaze in a back bedroom.
Tawshana Brown, the homeowner’s great-granddaughter, expressed heartbreak over the loss. “This is the only house I know,” she said.
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue spokesperson Erika Benitez advised residents to inspect heating equipment before use and to keep portable heaters at least three feet away from flammable items. She also warned against using extension cords with space heaters.
The American Red Cross is assisting the displaced family, who have lost everything in the fire.
