A newly released 911 call is shedding light on the moments after a 4-year-old girl was found unresponsive in a swimming pool at a rental home in El Portal, a case that has led to murder charges against the child’s mother.

Dr. Neha Gupta, an Oklahoma pediatrician, is accused in the death of her daughter, Aria Talathi, who was found on June 27, 2025. In the recording, Gupta tells a dispatcher she woke up to a noise and discovered her daughter at the bottom of the pool.

“I tried to get her out,” Gupta says on the call. “I don’t know how to swim.”

The dispatcher repeatedly urges Gupta to find a way to remove the child from the water, suggesting pool tools or attempting to pull her to the shallow end. Gupta is heard struggling and expressing uncertainty about the pool’s depth.

“She’s not moving,” Gupta tells the dispatcher. “She’s at the bottom of the pool.”

Police soon arrive and remove the child from the water, but she was pronounced dead.

Investigators later determined there was no evidence of drowning. According to arrest documents, authorities believe the child was smothered and then placed in the pool to stage an accident.

Gupta was initially charged with manslaughter, but prosecutors later upgraded the case to second-degree murder. She was arrested after returning to Oklahoma and remains jailed in Miami-Dade without bond.

Her defense attorney has maintained the child’s death was a tragic accident, insisting investigators acted too quickly. Gupta is awaiting trial.
